William M. “Bill” Hernly, age 88, resident of Mt. Summit, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at the Forest Park Health Campus in Richmond, Indiana.
He was born December 9, 1923 in Mt. Summit, Indiana a son of the late Aubrey and Estell Peckinpaugh Hernly.
He was a resident of Mt. Summit most of his life, and was a United States Army-Air Force Veteran of WWII, serving as a staff sergeant. He was a recipient of several military awards and recognitions. He was a graduate of Mt. Summit High School, and attended Indiana University, and Purdue University.
Mr. Hernly was associated with Standard Oil Company, for many years, as an owner and operator of his own business. Mr. Hernly was very involved with his family’s activities, and loved sharing time with family, and friends. He was a lover of horses, and was a co founder of the Henry County Saddle Club. He spent countless hours physically working on the horse and pony facilities at Henry County Memorial Park. He was a very active supporter of his children’s activities, especially training, and showing horses. He was an avid sports enthusiast, and especially enjoyed basketball, and baseball. He was a trap shooter, and competed in many trap shooting competitions. He loved teaching his grandchildren to shoot trap. He also was an avid stock market trader. He was a member of the National Trap Shooters Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association.
Left to cherish his loving memory include, his wife of 68 years, Edith L. Luellen Hernly of Mt. Summit, Indiana, whom he married March 10, 1944; his son and daughter in law, Dr. Jay and Beth Hernly D.D.S. of Saugatuck, Michigan; daughter and son in law, Lou and Tom Dickman of Richmond, Indiana; grandchildren, David and Megan Hernly of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Pat and Carrie Hernly of Tampa, Florida, Alex and Cathryn Dickman of Richmond, Indiana, and A.J. and Heidi Amspaugh of Indianapolis, Indiana; great grandchildren, Owen, Will, and Michael; Pat and Carrie have a baby due in August and A.J. and Heidi have a baby due in September; 1 cousin, Steve Hernly (wife Nancy) of New Castle, Indiana; also, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by, his parents and his aunt and uncle, George and Jane Hernly.
Visitation will be from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 25, 2012 at Macer-Hall Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 25, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mt. Summit Cemetery.
Military honors will be conducted by the V.F.W. and the American Legion.
